Improving data on rabies

Surveillance data is required for the evaluation of the progress of national rabies control and elimination campaigns. Therefore, effective country reporting and surveillance systems are critical.

Globally, the WHO supports and promotes integrated reporting systems for human and animal rabies surveillance with a view to build a coordinated and comprehensive understanding of the rabies disease burden and the impact of interventions. This is part of a larger WHO initiative to facilitate the integration of existing disease specific surveillance activities into a more efficient and sustainable health information system.

Countries are invited to actively participate in this global effort to strengthen the evidence base on rabies to inform policy, build awareness and forecast vaccine and immunoglobulin needs as well as required resources for control and elimination programmes.
