Rationale:
FGM/C is a traditional harmful practice that is usually performed on minors. It violates the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other human rights principles. FGM/C results in adverse health consequences in both the short and long term. The practice is also an extreme form of gender discrimination and is banned in many countries.
Definition:
Proportion of girls and women aged 15-49 years who have undergone female genital mutilation/cutting is currently being measured by the proportion of girls aged 15-19 years who have undergone female genital mutilation/cutting.
