Data disaggregated by sex shows us at sex and gender are key determinants of health risks, health-seeking behavior, health service provision and health outcomes and equity
The latest World Health Statistics Report show us that women outlive men everywhere in the world – particularly in wealthy countries. But it also shows that the number of equivalent years living in poor health is greater in women than in men
Although studies may strive to report sex-disaggregated differences in health, this does not show the impact of gender in driving those differences. More nuanced and qualitative analyses of gender are needed to understand how gender promotes or hinders health equity, and how the social construction of masculinity and femininity shapes men’s and women’s health.
