The UN High-level Political Forum (HLPF), a mechanism that tracks and advances the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, took place at the United Nations (UN) in New York, on 10–19 July 2017.

The forum brought together UN Member States, funds and programmes, specialized agencies, the private sector, academia and civil society to showcase best practices and innovative partnerships and to discuss progress on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, seven goals (Goals 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 14 and 17) including the health goal (SDG 3) were reviewed in depth on the theme “Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world”. Voluntary National Reviews were presented by 44 countries on successes, challenges and lessons learned, including on health, at the country level in implementing the SDGs.

The WHO office at the UN facilitated the organization of the WHO co-sponsored side events on universal health coverage, antimicrobial resistance and Noncommunicable diseases. Nata Menabde, Executive Director of the office delivered a statement on behalf of WHO, highlighting its work at the country level and the important role of universal health coverage in achieving the SDGs. The Forum culminated with the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration.
Dr Tedros Adhnom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, led the WHO delegation to the forum and participated in the opening of the ministerial segment and side events, including the WHO co-sponsored side events, and held several bilateral meetings with UN Member States and high-level UN officials. He also participated in the launch of the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2017, organized in collaboration with the Bloomberg Foundation that funded the report.
