Dr Chan briefs UN General Assembly on UN system coordination on outbreaks and health emergencies

The Director-General of the WHO along with the President of the UN General Assembly (PGA), the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and the Special Adviser on 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development briefed UN Member States on the United Nations system coordination on outbreaks and health emergencies, which the PGA emphasized must be integrated into long term sustainable development plans.

Dr Chan highlighted WHO’s new Health Emergencies Programme anddg-briefing-310 stressed on the importance of partnership, reiterating that WHO cannot act alone to protect society from health crises and emphasizing on the need for collective action. She also outlined progress made in the international coordination of health emergencies, including building on existing mechanisms and protocols to better respond to future health emergencies.
