On 16 November 2016, during the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (14-20 November 2016), the WHO Office at the UN (WUN) hosted an event in New York which brought together stakeholders across multiple sectors to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and foster best practices to prevent the spread of AMR.
Panelists from the Permanent Missions of Mexico and the United Kingdom, NYC Department of Health, Consumers International, Infectious Disease Society of America and the Food and Agricultural Organization, highlighted the growing burden of AMR, especially on mothers and newborns, and outlined the role of policy makers, local governments, medical practitioners and consumers in raising awareness and galvanizing action.
The event sought to build on the momentum achieved by the United Nations (UN) High-Level meeting on AMR in September 2016, where Heads of State committed to a broad, coordinated approach across multiple sectors to combat AMR.
