Since 2009, a nationwide cash reward of CFA 50 000 [about US$ 100] has been offered for the voluntary reporting of dracunculiasis cases. People are requested to report to the nearest health facility.

Since 2012, an unusually large number of dogs infected with the parasite has been reported along the Chari River in the same areas where human cases are being reported.

The parasites found in dogs are genetically indistinguishable from those emerging from humans. Operational research is under way to find appropriate ways to interrupt transmission of infections in both humans and animals.
